Apple Watch News: Here's How The Smartwatch Might Take A Backseat When You're Driving [VIDEO]

Apple Watch puts notifications on your wrist and this feature comes in handy especially when you're away from your iPhone. On the flip-side, that can draw your attention away when you're driving. But fret not; Apple might address this issue sooner rather than later, and here's how.

In the bid to take care of the aforesaid problem, Apple could decide to automatically enable its impending Theater Mode feature on Apple Watch. The feature will activate when the iPhone detects the user is in the car. Apparently, the Cupertino-based tech giant might be gearing up to roll out a something similar.

There are umpteen solutions to ensuring Apple Watch does not distract its wearer while driving, but they are not spared from flaws. Let's delve straight into the details.

CarPlay Mode

A user can take advantage of CarPlay mode, which restricts alerts allowing only important notifications such as phone calls, messages or driving directions, but this does not put a lid on fitness alerts. Moreover, the display wakes up every time the user moves his/her wrist.

Do Not Disturb Mode

By enabling this mode, the user can disable all alerts except notifications from VIP contacts; however, the display keeps lighting up due to the motion.

Theater Mode

A user can mute alerts as well as prevent the screen from waking up (unless tapped), but enabling and disabling has to be done manually.

Apple Planning A More Intelligent Approach?

Apple seems to have a few aces up its sleeves. 9To5Mac's Jordan Kahn bumped into a new patent from the tech giant, which was filed last fall and awarded Thursday, March 23.

Summing up the aforesaid patent, it looks like Apple wants the Watch to figure out when a user is driving with the help of motion detection, and then determine what alerts are forwarded, the number of alerts user can receive and also where will he/she receive them. Apart from that, Apple considers alerts that may be too important to hold back while driving, according to 9To5Mac.

This will definitely address a real problem with Apple Watch today. There's also a possibility this might come to fruition in watchOS 4 and iOS 11 later this fall.
