Halo 4: Metal Gear Meets Halo - 343 Industries Unveils Halo 3 Remake

Jonathan Charles

Halo 4 developer 343 Industries said that one map would be a remake from a past Halo game, though it did not reveal the map. A new trailer from the studio reveals that the map is Valhalla from Halo 3, revealed along with a new Metal Gear-esque vehicle.

Valhalla was a larger map in Halo 3, featuring a central hill as a control point. On either side is a crashed Pelican, with weapon drops, and part of a river in an open space. At either end of the maps are bases for the two teams. The map in Halo 3 was set on the Halo ring, with lush grass and an idyllic river as a backdrop against combat. Killed enemies often fell into the river to float away.

In Halo 4, the map looks similar to a desert with its dry ground textures, though players will recognise the layout instantly with everything from the Pelican to the rocks seemingly identical. The map looks like a 1:1 remake, rather than an spiritual successor as Halo 3's Guardian was to Halo 2's Lockout.

Both teams will have the new vehicle, called Mantis. The trailer (below) inidcates that the vehicle is overpowered and hard to destroy. However, Franchise Development Director Frank O'Connor stated on NeoGAF that the vehicle is not overpowered: it is slow to turn, can be hijacked, and can be made immobile by a charged Plasma Pistol bolt. Whether Mantis is available in Forge is unknown; if so Mantis-only gamemodes would probably enter matchmaking at some point.

Mantis is probably the mech teased in the campaign and seen in trailers previously. Whether longtime Halo players will warm to the vehicle is unknown. The Scorpion tank is arguably overpowered, but it has a long respawn time. The ammo count and/or weapon overheat time is also unknown. It is also unknown whether the Mantis is a Valhalla-only, or a vehicle designed for larger maps.

Halo 4 releases on Nov. 6 exclusively for Xbox 360.
