Samsung Galaxy S3: Sales Continue To Spike After iPhone 5 Release, Trial

Jonathan Charles

Samsung's Galaxy S3, despite the release of iPhone 5, is turning out to be a popular smartphone after all, according to recent data. Growth for sales is averaging 9 percent a week, with Apple's announcement serving to increase sales.

The data comes from Localytics, revealing the weekly nine percent growth since August 1. August is the month when Samsung lost over $1 billion to Apple as a part of a patent dispute, though the result caused a spike in Galaxy S3 sales, and not a decrease. August 21-27 saw the jump in sales by 16 percent; August 24 was the verdict date.

As CNET suggested, the threat of Samsung Galaxy S3 sales bans may have increased sales. The second week-long spike is Sept. 11-17, seeing a 15 percent increase. Apple unveiled iPhone 5 Sept. 12, going on sale Sept. 19. Pre-orders were available from Sept. 14.

Consumers may be interested to see how sales of iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 compare. Apple revealed the former sold five million units shortly after announcement; Samsung Galaxy S3 is predicted to reach 15 million sales in Q3 2012. Ten million of the devices have sold.

Samsung is rumored to be building a 'portfolio' to combat Apple, including Galaxy S3, and a new Samsung Galaxy S2. The company also released a table showing the update process of Jelly Bean across different carriers in the U.S. During the unveiling of Samsung Galaxy Note 2, the company confirmed Jelly Bean would arrive on both it and Samsung Galaxy S2.

Jelly Bean is the latest version of Android, bringing features including real-time updating service Google Now. The service differs from Siri because it provides ongoing updates to information. For example, changing flight terminals will show, and updates on a user's favourite football team can be configured. Alongside the information is a persistent microphone icon allowing system-wide search, bringing Siri-esque functionality.

Samsung Galaxy S3 release May 29. It is available now on At&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular. The device is available in Pebble Blue and Marble White.
