Microsoft's 'Seeing AI' App Lands on Android Devices Today

Austin Jay

Microsoft recently announced to the public that it is adding its "Seeing AI" app to Android phones, which is now available on the Google Play Store.

This program, initially in 18 languages, will cover 36 tongues next year.

"Seeing AI" helps those with sight trouble by clarifying their surroundings, analyzing documents, identifying merchandise, and describing photos.

Users take a photo with their phone's camera to catch a look and get an audio report of the material. Spreading to more tools lets blind and low-vision clients do different tasks independently by using audio depictions of where they are and imagery.

The 'Seeing AI' App

The "Seeing AI" app offers different ways to help with specific tasks.

For example, the Short Text thing says text out loud immediately if it's in front of the camera. The People and Currency things let you know who's there or what money is through pictures separately. Scenes tell you about what items you see in shots, so you can find where stuff is if you move your finger on the screen. Also, it reads writing by hand, knows colors, and more.

Now, on iPhone and iPad, the app versions for Android and iOS have updated extras. These include detailed descriptions of photos, a choice to ask about things you scan (like menu items or how much receipts cost), and something that sums up articles if you want.

These changes aim to help more with what the app can do and be available to folks who can't see.

The Effort to Help Vision-Impaired People

In his effort to bring help to more blind folks, Saqib Shaikh and his group they made their "Seeing AI" app for phones with Android, too.

This move was meant to help over three billion Android users everywhere, letting more blind and low-vision folks use this cool tech.

Shaikh said it's very important what users think cause their thoughts help shape later versions of the app best, knowing how helpful customers say it is for improving the AI stuff. Tellin' users to check out "Seeing AI" on Android, Shaikh can't wait to hear what they say and what they think could be polished up more.

"Seeing AI" makes it simple to understand pictures by telling details when to take photos or using the camera on everyone's phone.

The different channels have particular jobs: Short Text says the words quickly if you point the camera at the text. Documents help read pages that are printed. Products scan those barcodes and tell you about the items. Scenes explain what's in the pictures well. People can name anyone close by. Money recognizes what type of cash it is. Colors identify shades. Handwriting reads writing by hand. Light lets me know if it's bright or not. It even knows pictures from other apps.

Each part offers ways to quickly move around and learn about my area using the camera on my phone.
