Foldable iPhone: Unveiling the Latest Rumors and News
Austin JayIt's been anticipated that an iPhone might crease for years since foldables were first mentioned as smartphone options. Though reports of a bendy mobile kept surfacing, similar to how long phones have been out, Samsung finally unveiled their take five Galaxy Flip and Fold while Apple stayed on the sidelines.
However, Apple's approach of focusing on subsequent refinements rather than being the start of the market is a well-known strategy.
As foldable phones gain popularity, competition intensifies with the releases of notable devices like the Google Pixel Fold and OnePlus Open. While Apple has not ventured into the foldable realm, given the evolving landscape, the prospect of an iPhone Flip or iPhone Fold seems increasingly likely in the near future.
The rumored foldable iPhone has generated significant speculation, with divided rumors on its design - either featuring an accurate folding display or two screens connected by a hinge. Patents from 2019 showcase various designs, including a sizeable single-hinge display and a multi-hinge configuration for three displays.
Leaks by Jon Prosser suggest a prototype with two separate display panels on a hinge, featuring rounded edges akin to the iPhone 11 and a 'tiny forehead' for Face ID sensors.
Apple’s “foldable” iPhone isn’t really a foldable. 🧐

The current prototype has two separate display panels on a hinge.
Round, stainless steel edges like current iPhone 11 design.
No notch — tiny forehead on outter display that houses Face ID.
The design may follow a clamshell shape, offering vibrant color options. Another patent hints at a device folding into a larger form, comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. Additional leaks suggest Apple Pencil support, a 7-8 inch book-style foldable, Electronic Paper Display, a protective layer against cracks, and touch-sensitive solid-state buttons.
While an unofficial prototype has surfaced, the exact design and features remain uncertain.
The rumored iPhone Flip is anticipated to boast enhanced durability features, as an October 2020 patent suggested. This includes an upgraded ceramic shield explicitly designed for a flexible display, featuring layers for cover, hard coat, inner surface, and a transparent support layer made of glass or sapphire for added strength. There's speculation about a "self-healing material" layer to minimize scratches and dents.
A February 2020 patent proposed a hinge design allowing the foldable display to bend gradually, reducing stress on the panel for enhanced durability. Apple's continued efforts, including a crack-resistant display, underline its commitment to durability. Regarding software, the iPhone Flip is expected to run on iOS, with optimizations for multitasking to leverage the foldable form factor.

Based on multiple rumors, the speculated release date for the rumored foldable iPhone, potentially named iPhone Flip, is estimated to be around 2025. However, recent reports hint at a potential earlier arrival, suggesting that Samsung Display, a major iPhone display manufacturer, is intensifying efforts to produce folding screens for the device.
Despite this development, no concrete timeline has been established, and a December 2023 report indicated a prolonged wait.
As of February 2024, sources suggest a probable launch in 2026 or 2027, with both Samsung Display and LG Display reportedly sending screen samples to Apple. The nature of the device, whether a phone or tablet, remains undecided. While the exact cost remains unknown, a leaked figure points to a substantial $2,500, emphasizing a potentially high price point in line with other premium foldable phones in the market.
