Samsung Smart TVs Are Getting Spotify, Requires Premium Membership

Jonathan Charles

Spotify's expansion onto mobile platforms, which required subscriptions, detracted from the listen-to-music-for-free model it initially offered. Recently, Samsung announced in a press release that Spotify, the music streaming service, will be arriving on Samsung's Smart TVs as the two companies have signed a deal.

The deal means Spotify will be available on Smart TVs along with Blu-Ray players and home theater systems later in 2012. Samsung is rolling out advertisements, showing the ability to browse the Internet and use applications. Rival Google may have struggled to popularize Google TV, but Samsung's background in television could help the technology expand.

"Great music demands great sound quality. With the new Spotify app, people no longer need to fuss about connecting cables from their laptop or tablet to Hi-Fi equipment. Spotify for Samsung Smart TVs and home theatre system brings Spotify's huge music library directly into your living room," said, Dan Saunders, Samsung's Director of Content Services, Samsung Electronics Europe.

Spotify's launch on Smart TVs means the availability of on-demand music for over 18 million music tracks, though users will still need to be Spotify Premium members when using the mobile apps. Users can also listen to Radio on Spotify for free. However, Spotify is available to use for free for a limited and unspecified period.

At launch, the app will be available on Samsung's Smart TV 2012 E Series, and current owners will be able to download the app onto TVs. Spotify playlists will also sync across devices.

"The television is at the heart of most people's home entertainment experience, so it is a natural fit to make our music service available on internet-connected Smart TVs," Pascal de Mul, Global Head of Hardware partnerships at Spotify added.

Spotify launched in 2008 publicly. Following its launch the service is focusing on paid-for subscriptions, limiting the amount of time available of free users to listen to music. Ten hours of listening is the maximum time available.

Spotify is available now for iOSAndroid, and Windows Phone for free. A Premium subscription is required for users to access unlimited music with no advertisements.
