Halo 4 surfaced on torrent Web sites for users to freely download. Microsoft is giving users permanent Xbox Live bans, the company confirmed.
Leaks began to surface after a photo of the two discs included was uploaded; after screenshots of torrent Web sites with the download emerged online. The game's ending is also online, so users are advised to avoid the comment sections of Halo 4-related videos. Also, searching for key characters in Halo 4 on the franchise's Wikipedia Web sites includes details in-game on said characters.
"This email is to notify you that your Xbox Live privileges have been permanently suspended due to illegitimate prerelease title play. Because your conduct is in violation, the Xbox Live Enforcement Team has issued a permanent suspension. Your Xbox Live privileges will not be reinstated," the e-mail states to users.
Developers 343 Industries is encouraging users to report illegal content. It made a post on its Halo Waypoint blog spreading caution when watching videos. The best way to avoid being spoiled is to simply go dark to avoid content.
"We are aware of isolated cases in which Halo 4 content has been propped on the web and are working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation immediately," stated Microsoft. "Consumers should be aware that piracy is illegal and we take vigorous action against illegal activity related to our products and services. Playing pirated copies of games, such as Halo 4, is a violation of the Xbox Live Terms of Use and will result in enforcement action, such as account and console bans."
Creating new accounts with knowledge of a ban obviously is not a workaround. Console bans will mean users have to buy new Xbox 360s.
While leaking the game is unfortunate, it shows the anticipation surrounding the title. Recent data from research firm Nielsen revealed Halo 4 is the most anticipated Xbox 360 title pipping, notably, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Treyarch's shooter releases Nov. 13 worldwide.
Halo 4 launches Nov. 6 on Xbox 360.
