A new patent application published this week shows Apple's interest in Wireless Charging. If it all works out, Apple could become the first company to do Wireless Charging correctly.
At the moment, Wireless Charging can be found in smartphones like the Nokia Lumia 920 and Nexus 4; however, it is not considered as real wireless charging, which is due to the need for a charging plate to be plugged into the wall and the need for the phone to rest on top of the plate. This technology, even though marketed as wireless is not Wireless Charging in the truest sense. However, what Apple has in the pipeline could bring forth the real thing.
Apple recently patented a technology that will allow for over-the-air electricity that can charge low-powered devices. The system to make this happen is called near-field magnetic resonance, something that could potentially find itself in future iDevices. On the other hand, this patent application may lay the foundation for more lawsuits if other companies come forward with something similar.
According to Apple, the current method being used for Wireless Charging is only good for such devices as a mouse and keyboard, because they are very low powered. Currently, the means available are unable to charge a smartphone quickly enough, even though the handset is required to sit atop the charging plate.
Apple's technology has no such problems, the device will charge in true wireless form, rather than resting on a plate or a dock. If Apple is able to get this piece of technology in the iPhone 5S or the iPhone 6, it could potentially change the smartphone landscape again.
With Apple pushing real Wireless Charging, it wouldn't be long before all smartphones are capable of doing the same thing.
