Nokia's intention with the Windows Phone platform is to retrieve lost market share and finally become profitable again. With the release of the Lumia 620 mid-range Windows Phone 8 smartphone in China, things seem to be headed in the right direction.
The Nokia 620 is the most affordable Windows Phone 8 handset, a big surprise since it surpasses the HTC 8S in specs, a phone that held the crown of cheapest Windows Phone 8 device before the Lumia 620 set foot in the ring as a contender.
According to NokiaPowerUser, the Lumia 620 has gone on sale in China at two of the country’s major online stores. The pricing of the handset is more expensive than the $250 price tag Nokia placed on the device; however, this is expected since Nokia’s price did not take taxes into consideration.
Both online stores 360Buy and TMall are selling the device at Yuan 1999, which is equivalent to $350. Due to the relatively cheap price, the Lumia 620 should sell a lot better than the Lumia 920, which appears to be doing well for itself due to handsets selling out as soon as the shipments come in.
Despite being a mid-range handset, the Lumia 620 still manages to deliver all the exclusive Nokia experiences for Windows Phone 8, which are the key differences that set Nokia apart from other Windows Phone competitors.
It would be quite interesting to see if the likes of HTC or Samsung are able to bring their own Windows Phone 8 handsets down to the price level of the Lumia 620. Failure to do so would guarantee Nokia holding on to the number one Windows Phone OEM spot throughout 2013.
