You favorite iDevice is about to get faster as Apple has decided to add additional 36 carriers across the world to support LTE connectivity for iPhone 5 from next week.
The announcement was made by Apple CEO Tim Cook while announcing the company's Financial Results. "Next week, we're adding 36 more carriers for LTE support. These carriers will be in countries that we are not currently supporting LTE," Apple Insider quoted Cook as saying.
Once the promise is met, Apple will more than double the number of carriers that support fast 4G LTE data service for its flagship iPhone 5. Apple currently has 24 carriers around the globe supporting LTE service for iPhone 5. These carriers are spread across the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, Korea, Japan, and a few other countries.
Cook said the new carriers will be in countries where Apple does not have the LTE support currently. The Apple chief mentioned that the new carriers will be in the regions including Italy, Denmark, Finland, Switzerland, Philippines, and several other Middle Eastern countries.
"If you look at the total of all of these, the incremental subscribers in those countries it's over 300 million," Cook said, meaning LTE support in new countries is quite a big deal for Apple.
Taking the faster data service to 36 more countries, the total subscriber base will be 10 percent larger than Verizon Wireless. The world's largest LTE carrier, Verizon Wireless has nearly 257 million subscribers and it sold nearly 9.8 million smartphones in the last quarter, of which 6.2 million were iPhones. The huge expansion plan could prove positive for iPhone sales in the countries in line to receive this new support.
Cook further drew everyone's attention to the fact that iPhone 5 is compatible with other advanced data networks such as HSPA+ with downloads up to 42Mbps and said the latest version of Apple's flagship product is three times the speed as its predecessor iPhone 4S.
"We feel really good about the situation we are in, particularly with these adds next week," Cook concluded his talk on global carrier expansion.
