Samsung has released a new family of semi-smartphone/feature phones called the Samsung REX. The devices are four different budget phones for the low-range market in India. The smartphones drop Android and 3G to keep the phones very inexpensive. What the phones add on is where things get interesting.
The REX family looks like nano-sized versions of Samsung's Android smartphones. The handsets don't use Android but Samsung has cleverly used its TouchWiz UI on top of the Java-based feature phone OS the devices are running. Samsung's TouchWiz UI is the same UI it currently uses on its Android smartphones and it gives a more uniform look and feel across branding. There's also a Samsung App Store where users can download apps, games and music.
Here's how the devices stack up in the spec department:
The Samsung REX 90 features a 3.5-inch capacitive touch screen, 480 x 320 resolution screen, Smart Dual SIM with hot swap, TouchWiz UI with 7 home screens,15 hours of talk time, 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Facebook and Twitter pre-installed, myMovies, myMobile TV and myStation pre-installed, Push email with Activesync, Contact and Calendar sync, Opera mini-Web browser, Facebook Messenger, Gtalk, Yahoo messenger, and free games, music and app downloads from Samsung's App Store.
