ASUS took it to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show in Barcelona to unveil the latest addition to its PadFone range: the ASUS PadFone Infinity.
The new ASUS tablet-smartphone hybrid made its debut on Monday, Feb. 25, at MWC. The device sports an interesting redesign with an aluminum back and edge-to-edge glass display. The screen itself measures 5 inches and boasts a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels with a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch (ppi).
The LTE handset can also plug into a 10-inch tablet dock, which also offers 1,920 x 1,200 resolution. In other words, the 5-inch smartphone turns into a 10.1-inch tablet when docked into the PadFone Infinity Station, which is a companion accessory sold separately.
The ASUS PadFone Infinity has a 13-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture and a dedicated image sensor designed to enhance low-light capture. The camera can also shoot 1080p HD video, while a 2-megapixel front shooter allows for video chats. ASUS is also particularly proud of the handset's redesigned rear speaker and onboard audio equalizer software, which now allows users to adjust sound according to their environments.
The PadFone logo on the back of the device also serves as an NFC antenna. Under the hood, the handset packs a powerful 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM to support seamless switching between phone and tablet modes.
The PadFone Infinity comes with 64GB of Flash storage, and also ships with 50GB of cloud storage from ASUS. Other features include voice input, as well as hands-free operation via ASUS Echo.
According to the company, the PadFone Infinity should boast a battery life of 19 hours of talk time, 6.5 hours of browsing, 9 hours of video playback and 410 hours of standby time. Meanwhile, the PadFone Infinity Station acts as a battery pack as well, adding 57 hours of talk time, 19.5 hours of browsing, 27 hours of video playback and 1,230 hours of standby time.
Like every other PadFone ASUS released, the PadFone Infinity will not be available in the U.S. The device will reach European markets in April 2013 with a €999 price tag (about $1,235).
