Rumors of a Facebook phone have been circling the Web recently. However, it looks like a dedicated home screen, not an actual phone is what will be coming. This would make more sense than Facebook getting involved in hardware.
According to a WSJ report, the Facebook home screen is the first thing users will see when they turn on their Android handsets. This particular home screen will display content from users' Facebook accounts.
Facebook has been hard at work trying to get a dedicated home screen on a plethora of Android devices by attempting to collaborate with OEMs. HTC is expected to be the first OEM to have Facebook dedicated on its devices; however, it is not certain if the HTC line of Android handsets in the future will have this feature.
Getting more involved with mobile is an important stepping-stone for Facebook. It is also wise that Facebook is not planning its own phone — well, not yet anyway. By working with what is available, the company can bolster its experience in mobile and make some friends before attempting to come up with its own hardware. Make no mistake, a Facebook phone is coming, but it won't be any time soon, as the market would not accept it.
"It could drive more frequent access of Facebook and ultimately, more time spent on Facebook and more advertising revenue," said analyst Colin Sebastian at Robert W. Baird & Co.
Facebook also made a wise decision working with Android. The Google mobile operating system is number one ahead of iOS, there is over 1.3 million Android devices being activated per day according to Google, and with the coming of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S3, this number will definitely see a massive increase by the end of 2013.
