Nokia Lumia 920, 820, 620 Get Software Updates

Alexandra Burlacu

Not many companies seem focused on updating their mobile hardware on time, but Nokia just released a firmware update for the Lumia 920, 820 and 620 handsets.

While Microsoft's updates range from non-existent to seldom, Nokia seems one of the few brands taking the time to care for older devices. The popular Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and Lumia 620 are now set to get new goodies.

The updates are slated to roll out over the coming weeks, but they are apparently available already on some users' devices. According to the Nokia Support Discussions forum, the firmware update brings a number of improvements to the three devices.

For the Nokia Lumia 920, the update will bring improved automatic display brightness adjustment, a fix for the issue that caused intermittent screen blanking during a call, performance and stability improvements, as well as improvements to resolve the connectivity issues in certain network conditions.

The Nokia Lumia 820 and Lumia 620 handsets will also receive the improvements listed above for the Lumia 920. The Lumia 620, however, will get a few more enhancements, including improved touch screen functions, complete with corrections in multi-touch actions; better voice quality with Bluetooth handsets enabled with echo/ noise suppression; improvements to system performance, stability and usability; improved camera performance with corrected exposure when using flash in bright light conditions.

While the firmware update will not include any new functionality, the various improvements and enhancements are welcome nonetheless. Windows Phone handsets are Nokia's last chance to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive market, as the Finnish company is struggling to fight off more popular rivals offering iOS and Android smartphones.

The refreshes should at least make current owners of the Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and Lumia 620 feel more pleased with their devices, although ideally Nokia would draw a larger crowd toward its Windows Phone smartphones. Owners of other devices often wait for what seems like an eternity to get a minor upgrade, so Nokia gets a plus in this department.

The firmware update should roll out to all Lumia 920, Lumia 820 and Lumia 620 devices within the following weeks, so a notification should pop up on the phone screen once the phone is eligible for the upgrade.
