Google Play Store Update Adds 'App Data Sync' & More

Alexandra Burlacu

The annual Google I/O developers conference is officially ready to start, but Google decided to release a few early surprises, including a brand new Google Play.

The new Google Play Store just started rolling out ahead of the big event, bringing a few notable changes to the latest redesign and lots of other features in terms of Google Play Services.

The Google Play Store got its last redesign just last month, but now it's ready to sport some new changes. The previous 6-button layout is now revamped and looks a little catchier, with some user interface (UI) tweaks on the buttons. Google also spruced up the colors a bit, in addition to other changes. The new Play Store makes the jump from the previous 4.0.27 version to 4.1.6.

While the new version doesn't bring anything revolutionary, it has tons of small tweaks and changes to spice things up. The menu text is now more consistent, the install/uninstall buttons are different, and the space between them is now bigger. This means that users will no longer accidentally hit uninstall when they actually wanted to upgrade, so that's a nice change. If that does happen anyway, however, users can simply head to their Google account sync options and see the new option of app data sync. This option allows Google to sync and save the user's application data to the cloud so nothing is lost.

Google will likely elaborate further on the new "app data sync" option at Google I/O, but it should involve app settings and game saves, probably between devices as well. Google's much-rumored "Play Games" will likely use the app data sync option to backup data to the cloud.

The new and improved Google Play Store also sports various other changes to the user interface, including revamped wishlists, a different "redeem giftcard" button and a white settings page for those who missed it.

The upgrade also brings lots of other minor changes, which users will undoubtedly notice once the Google Play Store updates. Those who didn't get the update yet and don't want to wait any longer can hit the download link and get it now.
