Sony Xperia Z exclusively heading to T-Mobile this summer

The high-end Sony Xperia Z finally has an official U.S. availability, as the handset will exclusively hit T-Mobile "in the coming weeks."

T-Mobile officially announced that it will be the exclusive carrier for Sony's new flagship smartphone. The waterproof and dustproof Sony Xperia Z should arrive in U.S. soon with T-Mobile's Simple Choice Plan, but no exact release date or pricing details are currently available.

"T-Mobile customers traveling this summer will love the Xperia Z with its big, beautiful HD screen, water-resistant design and advanced camera features," T-Mobile's Vice President of Product Marketing Jason Young boasts in the press release. "This is an outstanding combination: a premium 4G LTE smartphone with Sony's best features coupled with T-Mobile's unlimited data and speedy nationwide network."

"With Xperia Z, we are thrilled to bring a breakthrough smartphone to T-Mobile, the breakout carrier in the U.S.," adds Timothy Hernquist, North America Vice President of Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications. "Xperia Z offers customers a beautifully designed, water-resistant premium Android smartphone ready to handle whatever life throws at it."

First unveiled back at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the Sony Xperia Z sports a 5-inch, 1080p touch screen display, a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera and IP57 certification for water- and dust-resistance. The smartphone will also run on T-Mobile's 4G LTE network that just hit seven markets, including Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, Phoenix and Houston.

In terms of specs and features, the Sony Xperia Z has what it takes to go head to head with the hottest Android smartphone currently available on the market, namely the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4. Sony, however, is still trying to leave a notable footprint on the highly-competitive U.S. mobile phone business.

The Sony Xperia Z is best known for its durability due to the IP57 certification and has even prompted other device makers, including Samsung (with its new Galaxy S4 Active) to launch more rugged handsets that are able to withstand some quick showers, a dusty climb up a mountain or a sandy day at the beach.

According to the press release, the Sony Xperia Z will become available nationwide at T-Mobile retail stores, select national retailers and dealers and online via T-Mobile's website in the coming weeks. The smartphone will come in a black finish and purple finish, but the latter is only for a limited time, while supplies last.
