Acer has launched its latest handset, the Liquid Z3, aiming to compete on the budget Android smartphone market.
The company already made a name for itself in the tablet and PC market, but it wants a piece of that competitive smartphone market as well. The Acer Liquid Z3 launches as the company's fifth smartphone, following the Liquid E1, Liquid E2, Liquid S1 and Liquid Z2 handsets.
The Acer Liquid Z3 sports a 3.5-inch HVGA display with a low resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, hitting the market as a mid-range Android handset.
"While much of the industry is trending toward larger and more complex devices, we believe there's also a whole lot of room for thinking small and simple," said Allen Burnes, Acer Europe's vice president of the smartphone division, in the press release. "Liquid Z3 bridges the gap for a new generation of smartphone users, providing they really can have it all without sacrificing the size and simplicity they want."
The Acer Liquid Z3 further packs a dual-core processor clocked at 1GHz, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage and a micro SD card slot for additional memory. The handset runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, which is a notable feature for a mid-range device. In terms of connectivity, the smartphone supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, 3G with HSPA+ support and micro USB.
The Liquid Z3 also comes with a 3-megapixel rear camera, a 1,500 mAh battery and dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) functionality. The smartphone features Quid Mode profiles, targeted at different user and age groups, according to the company. A Basic Mode is reportedly designed for youngsters and optimized for calls and text messages, while a Senior Mode sports features such as magnification, quick call and radio. The Classic Mode, meanwhile, is for first-time smartphone users and delivers all main functions in a simple and organized layout. Lastly, the Keypad Mode targets users who need the keypad right away.
Acer is launching its Liquid Z3 smartphone in selective countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain, Ukraine, Italy, UK, Germany and Russia. The smartphone will be available from mid-August for a starting price of €99 and will come in two color options: Rock Black and Classic White. Acer made no mention yet of U.S. availability.
