LG Display has just unveiled a new Quad HD smartphone display, boasting four times the resolution of current Full HD displays.
The company claims that its new display is the world's slimmest and narrowest. The new Advanced High Performance IPS (AH-IPS) LCD panel has several impressive features.
The new LG Quad HD smartphone display has a whopping resolution of 2560 x 1440, i.e. four times the 1280 x 720 resolution LG first introduced in 2012 and currently found on many high-end smartphones. The high resolution is spread over a 5.5-inch display, translating into a pixel density of 538 pixels per inch (ppi). In terms of brightness, the LCD is capable of reaching 430 nits.
"LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with introduction of the world's first Full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology," boasts Dr. Byeong-koo Kim, Vice President and Head of LG Display's IT and Mobile Development Group, as cited by Slashgear. "With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market."
LG's new Quad HD display will reportedly be able to reproduce more delicate colors and significantly improve the contrast and vividness of displayed content. The LCD will allow users to view video on their smartphones enjoying a Blu-ray-like quality. Moreover, the new panel will also allow users to view full desktop versions of web pages with no hassle, without distorting the image or making text less sharp.
The company made no announcement yet regarding when this technology will actually hit the market. According to Slashgear, however, research firm DisplaySearch estimates that LTPS-based smartphone displays will reach a record-breaking 765 million units shipped by the end of 2014. This whopping demand would be fueled by users' shift toward larger screens and desire for increasingly higher resolutions coupled with lower power consumption.
Considering that LG many smartphone manufacturers adopted the Full HD panel LG Display introduced back in 2012, this latest Quad HD display will likely become the next big thing and a must-have in top-end smartphones.
