Some instant messages on Google Talk, sometimes referred to a Gchats, are reportedly finding their way to the wrong recipients.

Numerous users have reported sending messages via Gtalk and finding out that said messages ended up with someone other than the intended recipient.

In some cases, users reported their messages ended up with people they didn't even have in their contacts lists. Many took to Twitter, Facebook or other sites to complain about the issue. On user, for instance, complained about having messages sent to "multiple, random recipients." There is a whole thread about the issue Google's Product Forums.

Google is aware of the issue and is still investigating it, but promises to offer a fix as soon as possible.

"We're investigating reports of an issue with Google Talk. We will provide more information shortly," read a first message posted earlier today, Sept. 26, on the Google Apps support page.

"Our team is continuing to investigate the issue. We will provide an update by 9/26/13 2:00 PM with more information about this problem. Thank you for your patience. At this time Google Talk is not functioning correctly and we are continuing to restore full functionality," reads a second post.

The third and last post so far, at the time of writing, seems a bit more reassuring and says the problem has been fixed.

"Our team is continuing to investigate this issue. We will provide an update by 9/26/13 3:30 PM with more information about this problem. Thank you for your patience. The issue has been resolved and all services are gradually returning to normal. We will update when full service is restored," explains the last update.

All three messages are listed with a "service disruption" sign.

So far, the issue seems to have only affected users in Google Talk who were trying to communicate with people who have updated to Google Hangouts, the company's latest instant messaging platform. In other words, the issue seems related to the ongoing transition from the previous Google Talk to the current Google Hangouts. 

As Google itself explained, services are gradually returning to normal. In the meantime, it may be a good idea to either avoid sending messages via Google Talk for now, or update to the newer Google Hangouts messaging service.
