Best Buy has launched a Microsoft Surface trade-in program, offering gift cards between $200 and $350 for a first-generation Surface RT or Surface Pro.
Just last month, Microsoft launched a trade-in program of its own, offering to buy old iPhones and iPads in exchange for a credit of up to $350, which could be put toward the purchase of a new Microsoft device such as a Surface tablet or a Windows Phone handset. Instead of buying old iDevices, Best Buy is now allowing customers to exchange their old Surface tablets for gift cards they can use toward a new purchase.
The Verge stumbled upon the new Best Buy "Surface Trade-in" page, according to which the retailer is offering up to $350 for a Surface tablet, depending on the device's condition.
Keep in mind, however, that the new program is not available at all retail locations and you must trade in the device along with the complete accessories and box to receive the highest credit. The deal only stands if you trade in your old Surface tablet to a Best Buy location and only if the device is in working condition.
To find out how much the tablet is worth, interested users can either visit a participating Best Buy store or use the links on the retailer's Surface trade-in page to calculate the device's value.
"If your item has no Trade-In value, we can recycle it for free," notes the website.
According to the Best Buy quote calculator a 32GB Surface RT in good condition could be worth $150, in fair condition it could fetch you $105 and in poor condition it could be worth $67.50. A 64GB Surface RT would get $175 if it's in good condition, $122 if it's fair and $78.75 if it's in poor condition.
A 64GB Surface Pro, meanwhile, would be worth $315 if it's in good condition, $220.50 if it's fair and $141.75 if it's in poor condition. The 128GB model would go up to $350 for good condition, $245 for fair and $157.50 for poor. None of the models would get any credit if they are not working.
The Best Buy Surface trade-in program runs through Oct. 21. The new-generation Microsoft Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 go on sale the day after that, on Oct. 22.
