LG has officially unveiled its curved display smartphone, introducing the LG G Flex with a very innovative feature: a self-healing rear.
Just a while ago, the rumor mill was buzzing about a race between Samsung and LG to be the first company to bring a flexible display smartphone to the market. Samsung won that race by unveiling its Galaxy Round first, but now it's LG's turn to show the world what the G Flex is all about.
As opposed to Samsung's Galaxy Round, LG's flexible display smartphone is curved on a horizontal axis rather than vertical. Aside from the curved display, the design language is mainly reminiscent of LG's other devices in its "G series," complete with the Rear Key concept the LG G2 introduced.
"Setting a new milestone in the evolution of the smartphone, LG Electronics (LG) officially took the wraps off the LG G Flex, a smartphone curved to follow the contour of the face, the first device to offer such a design in the smartphone market," LG boasts in its G Flex press release on Monday, Oct. 28.
"The latest device in LG's premium G series, the G Flex incorporates proprietary innovations from other LG companies in the form of the display and battery than have never been seen before. The G Flex also boasts new user experience (UX) features that take advantage of the curved form factor."
"The LG G Flex is the best representation of how a smartphone should be curved," added Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "The LG G Flex with its distinctive design, innovative hardware and consumer-centric UX represents the most significant development in the smartphone space since smartphone became part of our regular vocabulary."
When it comes to specifications, the new LG G Flex sports a 6-inch OLED display, but the resolution is only 1280 x 720 with a pixel density of 244 pixels per inch. The smartphone further packs a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) quad core processor clocked at 2.26GHz, paired with 2GB of RAM.
Other specs include a 13-megapixel rear camera, 32GB of internal storage capacity and Bluetooth 4.0. The handset runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with some of LG's own software customizations.
According to LG, its new G Flex curved display smartphone also boasts a self-healing coating, designed to automatically fill any small scratches in the case. This means that users can have a shiny-looking phone despite the normal wear and tear of daily use.
The new LG G Flex will become available in Korea starting in November, launching on all major carriers in the country. In terms of global availability, however, LG said it will announce additional markets at a later time. No pricing details are available at this point.
