The ASUS PadFone X smartphone/ tablet hybrid has made its official debut at CES 2014 and is headed to the U.S. as an AT&T exclusive.
Back in December, the new hybrid device from ASUS leaked online with some specifications, drawing plenty of interest. The company has now officially announced that its new PadFone X combination of a tablet and a smartphone will indeed make its way to the U.S. and will launch as an exclusive to mobile carrier AT&T.
The ASUS PadFone X aims to provide the best of both worlds by offering both a smartphone and a tablet experience in one single device. The smartphone itself sports a 5-inch display. When using the tablet dock, the device turns into a 9-inch tablet.
"We are committed to delivering our customers the most innovative and compelling device portfolio," Jeff Bradley, Senior Vice President of Devices at AT&T, touted in the press release. "The PadFone X is first of its kind in the U.S. It combines leading technology, a beautiful design and a remarkably seamless application experience - all on the nation's fastest and most reliable 4G LTE network. This allows consumers to run their smartphone apps instantly on a vivid 9-inch tablet display. The magic of it is that the experience is not just bigger, it's better than on a traditional smartphone."
"AT&T and ASUS share a passion for innovation and we are very excited to bring the ASUS PadFone X to the U.S. market," added ASUS Chairman Jonney Shin. "Our technology is capable of instantly turning a premium smartphone into a tablet, giving consumers the ultimate experience on both devices. Together, we look forward to bringing more choices to consumers."
ASUS revealed little information regarding the device's specs and features during its CES announcements. The press release notes the 5- and 9-inch sizes for the smartphone and tablet, respectively, but makes no mention of resolution. The company also failed to detail the type of processor, amount of RAM or storage. The press release does reveal that the device comes with 4G LTE.
If AnTuTu benchmarks published last month are to be believed, however, the PadFone X will pack a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.
ASUS will most likely announce more details regarding the PadFone X specs, features, price and availability very soon. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we hear more, so stay tuned.
