The much-rumored Nokia Lumia Icon smartphone is now official, heading straight to Verizon Wireless in the U.S.
Nokia has already launched high-end Windows Phone handsets on AT&T, leaving Verizon customers waiting for their own top-notch offerings. The Nokia Lumia Icon comes as a high-end Windows Phone smartphone exclusive to Verizon Wireless, and is set to hit the carrier's network on Feb. 20.
The new Nokia Lumia Icon, also referred to as the Lumia 929, sports a 5-inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, Gorilla Glass 3 protection, and a high pixel density of 441 ppi. The smartphone comes with a 20-megapixel PureView camera with several neat features, and boasts an elegant metal design for a more premium look.
"Nokia's newest Lumia is built for those who demand more from their phones and don't want to compromise when it comes to how this life companion captures each moment of their daily lives," the Finnish company touts in the press release.
"The first thing you'll notice about the Nokia Lumia Icon is its state-of-the-art 1080p full HD screen that feels great in the hand at a full five inches. The metal construction also gives the device a distinctive look, making this one of 2014's most anticipated new devices."
The Nokia Lumia Icon's 20-megapixel camera supports full-resolution photos, as well as scaled-down images for easier sharing. It has a 1/2.5 BSI sensor with an f/2.4 lens, dual-LED flash, and 1080p video recording capabilities.
Under the hood, the Verizon-exclusive Nokia Lumia Icon packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz and paired with 2GB of RAM. The smartphone comes with 32GB of internal storage capacity and has no microSD card slot for additional memory. In terms of software, the handset runs Windows Phone 8 with the Lumia Black update. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi ab/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, and USB 2.0. The smartphone further comes with a 2,420 mAh battery with built-in wireless charging support.
Verizon will start offering the Nokia Lumia Icon on Feb. 20 for $199.99 on a two-year contract, both online and in-store. The press release further notes that Microsoft stores are already taking pre-orders for the Lumia Icon and customers who purchase the handset before March 16 will also get a free Nokia Wireless Charging accessory.
