U.S. HTC One X owners may have some hope after all, as HTC is looking into the possibility of updating the handset to Android 4.4 KitKat.
Back in January, HTC announced that its One X and One X+ smartphones would not be receiving any further software updates beyond Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, drawing lots of criticism from owners of the two devices.
Not all hope may be lost, however, at least not for HTC One X owners in the U.S. While the global versions of the handsets will stop at Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, the U.S. model of the HTC One X may have a chance at Android 4.4 KitKat, as the company is now looking into this possibility.
This news comes straight from the source, as HTC's product team made this announcement on Reddit, saying that they are exploring the possibility of pushing Android 4.4 KitKat to the device.
"To address an issue that's top of mind for many folks here, we recently announced that we wouldn't be updating the HTC One X and One X+ beyond Android 4.2. Without the support of our chip manufacturer Nvidia, it made a global update of One X and X+ impossible," HTC explained.
"However, in the US the One X uses the Qualcomm chip and an upgrade would be possible, but we didn't think it would be a good experience for our customer base to update the X, but not the X+. This update caused a huge stir among owners and we've heard you loud and clear, so we're now actively exploring how we can make the jump to 4.4."
While this is by no means a promise or a guarantee that the HTC One X will actually get a software update to Android 4.4 KitKat, it's definitely good news that the company is working on the possibility. If HTC decides that it can push out the update, the U.S. model of HTC One X may get the latest version of Android in the near future. Nothing is for certain at this point, but we'll make sure to keep you up to date as soon as new information becomes available.
