The much-touted Nokia X Android smartphone has just leaked in new images, showing a user interface quite similar to the tile-based Windows Phone UI.
Rumors about an Android-based smartphone from Nokia have been making rounds for quite some time, claiming that the Finnish company may finally break from its chains with Microsoft and release a handset running Google's popular OS.
Nokia has dedicated itself solely to Microsoft's Windows Phone OS and has managed to boost the platform's market share and popularity by launching a slew of Lumia devices. The company has a great reputation worldwide for releasing quality, durable handsets, but many consumers want a Nokia smartphone running on Android instead of Windows Phone.
By all accounts, it seems that Nokia is finally ready to give consumers what they want, as the company is expected to unleash its very first Android device at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014. Nokia has not offered any official confirmation in this regards, but a few subtle hints suggest that it will happen. For instance, the company has recently changed the colors of its Twitter and Facebook pages in a green hue just like the color of Google's popular Android mascot.
The purported Nokia X, also referred to as Nokia Normandy, has leaked extensively in the past few months, with several images of the smartphone making rounds online.
The latest leak now gives us a better look at the purported Nokia X's home screen, which seems to feature a Windows Phone-inspired UI. While it's not official, it does fall in line with previous leaks showing the Nokia X with a Lumia-like design. Other than the UI, the new leak also shows that the handset will have the volume rocker on the right side, along with what looks like a dedicated camera button, again in a Lumia-like fashion.
The Nokia X is expected to run a forked version of Android, similarly to how Amazon's Kindle tablets run the Android Fire OS. Because it runs a forked version of Android, Amazon doesn't use Google Play, offering its own app store instead. Nokia is expected to follow the same pattern with its Android smartphone, and the latest leak shows what appears to be a dedicated app store. Another notable detail shows Nokia's HERE maps instead of Google Maps.
Nokia's Android smartphone is expected to come with entry-level or mid-range specifications at best, targeting emerging markets and budget-conscious consumers. Based on rumors so far, the Nokia X may sport a 4-inch display with a modest resolution of 854 x 480 pixels and feature a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Other rumored specs include just 512MB of RAM, 4B of internal storage capacity, a 5-megapixel rear camera, and a 1,500 mAh battery.
Keep in mind, however, that all of the above-listed specs are based purely on rumors and speculation, and nothing is official at this point. If Nokia does indeed plan to unveil its first Android smartphone at the MWC, we'll know all the juicy details about the Nokia X in just a few days. We'll keep an eye on Nokia's presentation at the show and keep you up to date as soon as we learn more.
