Samsung Galaxy S5 Active SM-G870x to hit AT&T and Sprint soon?
Alexandra BurlacuA Samsung Galaxy S5 Active smartphone with model number SM-G870x is apparently ready to hit the U.S. soon on Sprint, AT&T, and other carriers.
Last year, Samsung built on the success of its then-flagship Galaxy S4 by releasing several spinoffs, including a more rugged version called the Galaxy S4 Active. The company is expected to follow a similar pattern this year with its latest Galaxy S5 flagship, and it now seems that a Galaxy S5 Active is in the cards for the U.S.
According to a new tweet from well-known and trusted tipster @evleaks on Tuesday March 25, the Samsung SM-G870x is nothing but the model number of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, which is "coming to AT&T and Sprint, among other carriers."
The tipster has provided no additional information regarding the smartphone's launch, specs, or other details. Samsung has not announced any plans so far to launch a Galaxy S5 Active, but such a version wouldn't come as much of a surprise.
If @evleaks proves to be accurate, this model will launch as the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active. As previously mentioned, the Galaxy S4 Active launched last year as the more rugged version of the flagship, bringing water and dust resistance for extra durability. However, the new Samsung Galaxy S5 is already dust- and water-resistant, so it remains unclear what other capabilities a more rugged version would bring to the table.
While very little details are currently available regarding this purported Galaxy S5 Active, the smartphone is expected to sport similar specifications to the original flagship, albeit a bit watered-down. Samsung is also rumored to be working on a camera-centric version of the flagship, which would launch as the Galaxy S5 Zoom, again following last year's strategy. If recent reports are to be believed, the Galaxy S5 Zoom will boast a 20-megapixel camera and pack a hexa-core processor under the hood, among other things.
As always with rumors and speculation, however, it is highly advisable to take everything with a hefty grain of salt until official confirmation. If Samsung does indeed plan to launch more Galaxy S5 models, we should hear more about it soon enough. We'll keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available.
