Samsung Galaxy S5 Developer Edition goes live, exclusive to Verizon Wireless
Alexandra BurlacuThe Samsung Galaxy S5 Developer Edition is now finally live, but it's exclusive to Verizon and will cost $599.99, the same price as the regular version unsubsidized.
Tweakers and tinkerers can now rejoice, as Samsung's latest flagship powerhouse is now available as a Developer Edition version, provided that Verizon is your carrier of choice. Big Red has just added the Samsung Galaxy S5 Developer Edition to its portfolio, and it currently holds the exclusive rights to sell it.
As expected, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Developer Edition doesn't sport many changes in terms of specifications compared to the standard model. It has the same 5.1-inch full HD 1080p display, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, 16-megapixel rear camera, fingerprint scanner, and heart rate monitor. On the other hand, this edition comes with only 16GB of internal storage capacity, with no other built-in storage options, but it is expandable via microSD.
The main attraction of this Galaxy S5 variant is that it is a Developer Edition, which usually means that it comes with an unlocked bootloader that will allow tweakers to do their magic. It's worth pointing out, however, that the smartphone doesn't come rooted, and, as always, flashing a ROM will void the warranty. On the other hand, customers interested in the Developer Edition of a device are typically well aware of everything it involves, including voiding warranties by flashing ROMs.
At the same time, as the device doesn't come with a carrier subsidy, the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 Developer Edition will require interested buyers to shell out quite a considerable amount of money.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Developer Edition costs $599.99, which is the same amount as the full retail price of the standard version of the smartphone on Verizon. It may be a bit much to spend all at once, but it's also considerably less than last year's Samsung Galaxy S4 Developer Edition, which launched with an even higher price tag of $649.
The Verizon-exlusive Samsung Galaxy S5 Developer Edition is available only in Charcoal Black and is now available for purchase at this link. It remains unclear at this point whether Verizon will have the exclusive on this variant just for a while, with other options to become available afterwards, or it will remain bound to Big Red for good.
