Microsoft Surface Pro 3, Pro Type Cover now officially available for purchase
Alexandra BurlacuThe Surface Pro 3 has officially made its commercial debut, as the new tablet powerhouse from Microsoft is now available for purchase.
The new Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is the company's latest flagship tablet and it comes with high-end specs and features all around to make it worthy of the title. If the first- and second-generation Surface Pro tablets were good, but not utterly impressive, this one is definitely among the strongest contenders on the tablet market.
As of now, the Surface Pro 3 is officially available for purchase at retail stores, through Microsoft's online store, as well as through authorized resellers in the U.S. and Canada. The commercial release comes exactly one month after Microsoft unveiled the tablet, but only the Intel Core i5-based versions are available for now.
All customers who pre-ordered a Surface Pro 3 tablet with a Core i5 processor under the hood will receive their devices now. The Core i5 and i7 versions of the slate, however, will not ship until Aug. 1, the same date when the tablets will also become commercially available in stores and at authorized resellers.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 aims to serve both as a tablet and as a laptop, giving users the best of both worlds in a highly portable device.
"So many people carry both a laptop and a tablet but really want just one device that serves all purposes," Microsoft's Panos Panay touted when announcing the slate. "Surface Pro 3 is the tablet that can replace your laptop - packing all the performance of a fully powered laptop into a thin, light and beautifully designed device. You'll love being able to carry a single device for your next class, workday or weekend getaway knowing you have all the power you need."
Both the Core i5-based Surface Pro 3 and the Pro Type Cover that turns it into a laptop are already available for purchase, but the docking station will not arrive until Aug. 15 in the U.S. and Canada, Panay said. Interested buyers can find the Surface Pro 3 on Microsoft's online store at this link, purchase the Pro Type Cover here, or pre-order the docking station at this link.
As a reminder, the Core i5-powered Surface Pro 3 comes in two models: the 128GB variant costs $999, while the larger-capacity version with 256GB on board goes up to $1,299.
