Moto G successor to debut on Sept. 10, cost twice as much?
Alexandra BurlacuThe highly-anticipated Motorola Moto G successor, unofficially dubbed the Moto G2, may commercially debut on Sept. 10, according to a new report.
The budget Moto G proved to be the company's most successful handset, as it attracted plenty of buyers due to its good specifications and low price tag. It's considered one of the best value smartphones and its successor is expected to make its debut soon. The Moto G2 is rumored to sport some notable improvements over its predecessor, and more details are now available.
According to a new report from GSM Arena, the Moto G2 should hit retail as soon as next month.
"The successor of Motorola Moto G, rumored as Moto G2 and Moto G+1, should be available for purchase on September 10. The information comes from a retailer, which got the info straight from a Motorola rep," GSM Arena reports.
The Moto rep in question reportedly refers to this handset as the Dual-SIM Moto G with 5" display, and claims that the device will start shipping to retailers on Sept. 10.
"Some lucky retailers will be able to get the first batch of Moto G2 phones as early as the end of August, but it's unclear if they will be allowed to sell it before September 10."
The publication also obtained some details regarding the Moto G2's expected pricing, revealing that the handset should come with a price tag of roughly €250. That's significantly more expenside than the original Moto G and about 25% higher than the price of the current Moto G 4G model, so it remains to be seen whether it will enjoy the same success as its predecessor.
In terms of specifications, the Moto G2, or Moto G+1, is expected to come with a 5-inch HD 720p display, a Snapdragon 800 chipset with a quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU clocked at 1.2GHz, Adreno 305 graphics, and 1GB of RAM. Other rumored specs include an 8-megapixel rear camera with 720p video recording, a 2-megapixel front shooter, 8GB of internal storage capacity, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box. It remains unclear at this point whether the Moto G2 will come with microSD support for additional storage. The original Moto G did not support expandable storage, but the subsequent Moto G 4G model came with microSD on board.
If this purported Sept. 10 retail launch proves to be accurate, the Moto G2 could make its official debut at the IFA 2014 trade show in Berlin early next month. Motorola is also expected to unveil its Moto X+1 around the same time, so the two handsets could debut simultaneously.
It all remains in the rumor state for now, however, so take everything with a grain of salt until official confirmation.
