Sony to unveil Android Wear-powered SmartWatch 3, SmartBand Talk wearables at IFA 2014
Alexandra BurlacuSony reportedly plans to introduce two Android Wear-powered gadgets at IFA 2014: a new smartwatch and a smart fitness band.
The IFA 2014 trade show kicks off in just a few days and a slew of companies will unveil their latest and greatest devices. Sony is one of them, and two new wearable devices are reportedly among the company's announcements.
According to a new report from 9to5Google, Sony will announce a SmartWatch 3 and a SmartBand Talk at its IFA 2014 press event on Sept. 4. While previous reports suggested that Sony's next-generation smartwatch may skip Google's new platform for wearable devices, 9to5Google now claims that both of these gadgets will in fact run Android Wear.
It's worth pointing out that the Sony SmartWatch 2 already runs a heavily skinned version of the Android platform, but the next-generation SmartWatch 3 will launch as the first one in the company's lineup to run Android Wear.
Based on leaks and reports so far, the Sony SmartWatch 3 is expected to sport a 1.68-inch display with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels and may feature a similar design to Samsung's Gear 2 Neo. The SmartWatch 3 will also reportedly come with IP58 certification, which means that it will be dust- and water-resistant, able to withstand being submerged in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.
The SmartBand Talk, meanwhile, will apparently come as an upgraded version of Sony's previous fitness tracker, the SmartBand SWR10, which debuted earlier this year.
The new fitness tracker will reportedly feature a curved e-ink display, as opposed to the LED display found on the previous SmartBand (SWR10). Little else is known at this point regarding this gadget, but, as 9to5Google points out, the device's name suggests that it may integrate with specific phone or notification features.
In addition to these new wearable gadgets, Sony is also expected to introduce other devices at the IFA 2014 trade show, including the new Xperia Z3 flagship smartphone, an Xperia Z3 Compact, and an Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.
Nothing is officially confirmed at this point, but we'll soon get the official scoop straight from the source on Sept. 4.
