HTC RE: 'A remarkable little camera' - Specs, features, pricing and availability
Alexandra BurlacuHTC has officially introduced its RE camera solution, which looks like a periscope and aims to serve as a mobile smartphone camera without a screen.
After a slew of rumors that left us with more questions than answers in regards to the new HTC camera, the company made its RE (that's it, just RE) official, as "a remarkable little camera." The new HTC RE is not quite on par with GoPro, as some rumors suggested, but it nonetheless aims to serve as a mobile smartphone camera, even if it doesn't have a display.
"Step out from behind the camera and live life in full view with RE, HTC's newest photography innovation," reads a new company blog post. "RE is a small handheld camera that allows you to capture and fully experience every moment, through video and photography, without the hassle and awkwardness of grabbing your phone or camera and missing the moment because you were too busy capturing it."
"RE was made to fit comfortably in your hand and features a built-in grip sensor that instantly activates the camera on pick up, eliminating the need for a power button. Its single shutter button allows one-tap to capture photos and a longer press for video recording for seamless switching between modes."
The new HTC RE is basically just like any camera, albeit it doesn't have a display on its back and it's shaped like a periscope. The RE also comes with no off switch, and users will be able to control both still camera and video capture with the same large button.
A quick press of the silver button in question will snap a 16-megapixel photo with a 1/2.3-inch Sony CMOS sensor, while long-pressing the button will start and stop video. The HTC RE also features another button on the front, designed to capture slow-motion video.
The camera has a 146-degree wide-angle lens, features software stabilization for video shooting, and allows for "underwater selfies," according to HTC, due to its waterproof rating.
Users will be able to control the HTC RE with an app, which will work on both Android and iOS. The app will provide access to all photos and videos captured with the camera, and the phone with the app installed can also serve as a remote viewfinder and shutter trigger. Moreover, HTC also plans to add a live-streaming feature soon, which will allow users to broadcast from the RE straight to the Internet.
"Featuring a high-resolution, 16MP CMOS sensor, Full HD (1080p) video recording, 146 degree wide-angle lens and slow-motion and time lapse recording, RE captures moments like you have never seen before. The RE app features a remote live viewfinder that lets you set up the perfect shot and watch the live action on the screen of your mobile device, or switch to album and playback view to flick through the shots and videos already stored up on the camera. Because life's adventures are limitless, the app will also back everything up to your phone or the cloud automatically so you never need to worry about running out of space and missing a shot again," HTC further boasts.
The HTC RE will be available in white, orange, teal, and navy blue color options, and sell though recamera.com, HTC, Amazon, Best Buy, and U.S. carriers, for $199. The device will hit commercial availability in the U.S. starting this November, with other countries set to follow afterwards.
