Surface Pro 2 tablet quietly goes off sale on Microsoft Store
Alexandra BurlacuMicrosoft has apparently decided to stop selling its Surface Pro 2 tablet, as the device is no longer available for purchase from the Microsoft Store.
Not too long ago, the company released its latest and greatest tablet in the form of the Surface Pro 3, aiming to replace the need for another computing device such as a laptop. At the time, many expected Microsoft to stop selling the previous-generation Surface Pro 2, and now it appears that's exactly what's happening.
The Microsoft Store still shows content related to the Surface Pro 2 tablet, complete with a product page for the device with a $799 starting price, as you can see in the image above, but hitting the "Buy Now" button leads to a dead end. More specifically, it redirects you to a page that simply says "This product is currently unavailable."
In other words, Microsoft made no official announcement, did not place an "out of stock" label on the Surface Pro 2 product page, and didn't offer any explanation, it simply stopped selling the device. Neowin was the first to report on this matter.
"After poking around a bit and using the sales chat function, the representative said that the Surface Pro 2 is no longer for sale on the site and that's about all there is to say," Neowin reported.
The news, however, shouldn't come as much of a surprise considering that the Surface Pro 2 is an aging model and a new iteration has taken its place. Moreover, the Pro 2 has not received any major update since it launched, and it was not a big upgrade to begin with compared to its predecessor. The Surface Pro 3 was expected to replace the Pro 2 model on the Microsoft Store, and now it has officially happened.
Consequently, Microsoft fans who were thinking of purchasing a Surface Pro 2 tablet will now have to start shopping elsewhere, and preferably do so without waiting too much. The device will most likely be available in limited quantities from now on, assuming that retailers still have stock left. Best Buy, for instance, still sells the Surface Pro 2, but it remains to be seen for how long.
