HTC One M8, One M7 GPE models get Android 5.0 Lollipop this Friday, Nov. 21
Alexandra BurlacuThe HTC One M8 and M7 Google Play Edition (GPE) models will eventually get their Android 5.0 Lollipop this Friday, Nov. 21.
HTC was among the first companies to detail plans for updating its lineup to the very latest version of Android. As you may already know, whenever a new Android version is ready, the Nexus family is typically the first in line to get the update, followed by GPE devices.
The GPE versions of the HTC One M8 and One M7 were supposed to get a taste of the new Lollipop flavor early this week, but that obviously did not happen. As it turns out, the update has been delayed, but only slightly.
When asked about the Android 5.0 Lollipop update rollout for the HTC One M8 and M7 GPE models, HTC's Vice President of Product Management, Mo Versi, replied that the update has been pushed back to this Friday, Nov. 21. This means that although the update is rolling out slightly later than originally announced, HTC will still be among the first to release the latest Android treat to its devices.
The Android 5.0 Lollipop for HTC devices will be the first update to roll out with more than just the basic Vanilla firmware Google cooked up. It remains unclear at this point just what exactly this will mean, but the HTC One M8 and M7 are expected to receive neat treats.
At the same time, the update may not necessarily be the same for the entire HTC One family. Shortly after Android 5.0 Lollipop made its official debut, HTC announced that it plans to upgrade its entire HTC One lineup to the latest software, but different smartphones may get different tweaks. For now, Mo Versi suggests that only the GPE models of the HTC One M8 and M7 will get the update this week.
All other versions of the HTC One M8 and M7 are reportedly still in the evaluation stage of the upgrade process of this point, but should nevertheless receive Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Earlier leaks, meanwhile, suggested that the HTC Desire EYE, One M8 Dual SIM, One E8, One E8 Dual SIM, and HTC Butterfly 2 should get the update sometime in the January - March timeframe, while the HTC One Mini 2 and HTC Desire 816 should get it in the March - April timeframe.
