Microsoft Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL break cover at MWC 2015 (VIDEOS)
Alexandra BurlacuMicrosoft has two new Windows Phone Lumias in store, as the company just announced the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015.
While some were expecting to see a high-end Lumia flagship at the MWC, Microsoft has confirmed rumors that it will keep focusing on affordable handsets for now. Both the Lumia 640 and the Lumia 640 XL come with mid-range specifications on board, but Microsoft hints at powerful performance and productivity, claiming its latest smartphones are "for the doers."
"Doers are the ones who get things done. The ones who act upon their dreams," Microsoft touts in a new press release on Tuesday, March 3. "Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL will help you be a doer, giving you the freedom and flexibility to choose when and where you want to get things done."
Both the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL pack 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processors paired with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage, microSD card slot for up to 128GB of additional memory, and 30GB of OneDrive cloud storage space. While they share these specifications, however, there are also notable differences between the two.
The Lumia 640 features a 5-inch HD display, an 8-megapixel rear shooter, a 1-megapixel front camera, and a 2,500 mAh battery to keep things up and running.
The Lumia 640 XL phablet, meanwhile, has a larger 5.7-inch HD display and better cameras, rocking a 13-megapixel rear shooter and a 5-megapixel front camera. As expected, the larger model also packs a more powerful battery in the form of a 3,000 mAh unit.
On the software side, both devices run Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim on board out of the box, and will receive an upgrade when Microsoft rolls out its latest Windows 10 OS.
Microsoft has yet to offer an exact launch date for its latest Lumias, but did offer pricing details for the handsets. The Lumia 640 will come in 3G and LTE models that will cost around €139 and €159, respectively, and will start rolling out globally in April. The larger Lumia 640 XL will come in single SIM and Smart Dual SIM models, with prices starting at roughly €189 for 3G and €219 for LTE, rolling out later this month. The estimated prices for both handsets are before taxes and subsidies, and may vary depending on market and operator.
