Google Tests Password-Less Logins

Google Tests Password-Less Logins

Mary Cris Balancio

Google is set to make a buzz with the latest plans its has of a password-free login. The tech giant has confirmed that it is in the process of testing this new way of signing in to a user's Google account without the need for any password. What will happen is that the user will instead login by responding to a notification that has been sent to his smartphone.

The new password-less method of logging in can be said to be a bit like the recently launched "Account Key" by yet another tech company, Yahoo. Yahoo's version offers a password-free signing in by using a push notification that has been sent to the user's handset, which will then open an app where the user can approve the login.

Passwords have always been a major concern when it comes to user account security; oftentimes they are easily hacked as users hate using complex passwords or use the same password they have for another service or account.

Developments have been done in the past resulting to two-factor authentication to increase the user's account security. This method makes a user enter in a code sent through his phone via text or use a USB with a secret token to access his account. But many still find these countermeasures to be a bit irritating to use as there is an added process of logging in.

This dilemma is what the supposedly password-less login is trying to solve. With this option, users can access their accounts more securely, faster and without the hassle of an extra step that might inconvenience them.

Google's version of this password-free login makes a user enter his email address when signing in to his Google account. A notification will then be seen on the user's smartphone asking him whether he is trying to sign in from another device. The user just needs to select yes, and voila! Just like that he is now logged in.

The test for the password-free login is currently ongoing with a select number of users who are invited to test it. A spokesperson for the tech company has confirmed it and said that they have indeed invited a small group of users to test their new process of signing in on a Google account without the use of passwords.

The tech giant assures the waiting users that it might also ask for a user's password if the way of login attempt seems unusual. But there is still the concern of losing one's device. If this happens, Google says, the user simply has to login from another device and remove that missing device's access to his account. The logic seems fool proof enough for now.

And while the confirmation of the test is out, the rolling out or the expanding of the said feature is still pretty much in a shroud of mystery as the tech giant didn't comment on the issue. For now, what is known is that the test is ongoing and the process can work on both iOS and Android devices.
