The Witcher 3: Blood And Wine Boss Guide: How To Defeat Shaelmaar

Jazz Rosin

Shaelmaar is one of the bosses in the latest expansion of 'The Witcher 3', and is possibly one of the hardest in the game. Find out how you can defeat him using a couple of different tips and tactics.

Shaelmaar is waiting for Geralt at the Toussaint arena. With its high defense and dangerous attacks, killing it will be no easy feat.

Geralt will not be alone in this boss battle, as he will be accompanied by one of the knights errant to take out the rolling ball of monstrosity. He can dish out decent damage from Shaelmarr, but he will end up as a liability rather than an asset, as you would need to protect him from the creature's attack as well.

Shaelmaar's Moves

Shaelmaar has three dangerous attacks you need to watch out for.

The creature has a ground pound AOE that sends an explosive line through the ground, which can break your guard and leave you open to attacks. You can easily avoid this by sidestepping.

Shaelmarr will also burrow into the ground and will rotate violently, sending another AOE attack. It is similar to the earlier attack, but has a wider reach and lasts longer. Watch out for this move, and quickly run to the opposite side to avoid this attack.

The last one, a rolling charge attack, will be one of the few times that Shaelmarr will be vulnerable to your own attacks. Shaelmarr will charge at you, and you would need to roll to the side to avoid it. Dodging will not work, as you would need to cover more ground due to Shaelmarr's huge body.

Shaelmarr's Weak Points

Start with these three essential points. Relict oils will increase your damage, so make sure you stock up before facing Shaelmarr. Samum bombs and the Aard Sign are important here as well. You will be using them to draw the beast's attention, as the beast is blind and will try to find the vibrations you will be producing.

The beast's weak point is its stomach, hidden under a thick, hard shell. The rest of its body is covered in hard shell as well, but the weakest part of it is on the stomach, so this is where you need to target Shaelmarr first. To do this, hug the arena wall and wait for Shaelmarr to charge towards you. Use the Aard sign to lure the beast to your position.

Once Shaelmarr is near you, roll away from the incoming attack, as described above. The creature will hit the wall and end up on its back. Use relict oil on your sword and hack away at Shaelmarr's tummy, using strong attacks to finish it off. Repeat this a couple of times and you will finally defeat the Beast of Toussaint.
