Players Not Happy About 'Watch Dogs 2' Hero, Because He is Black

Jazz Rosin

Ubisoft recently launched the official reveal trailer of its upcoming game "Watch Dogs 2", and some gamers are now questioning the game developer's choice of hero, just because of the color of his skin.

"Watch Dogs 2", which is set in the San Francisco Bay Area, will follow the story of a promising hacker named Marcus Holloway. Marcus was profiled incorrectly by the city's ctOS security system, causing him to be thrown in jail for a crime he did not commit.

In a report made by Fusion, some players have expressed their concerns over the protagonist's race. A thread on the Steam Community Forums, titled "Shoehorned Black Character, Why Can't We Be Aiden?" was started by user "MentholFox", saying that he or she does not want to play as an "affirmative action MC".

"Look at the demographics of San Fran," MentholFox commented. "It would be more plausible if I played as a homo or an asian than some random black dude. Considering they make up 6% of the population in SanFran fam."

Some even said that the story did not make any sense because Marcus is supposed to be a hacker, and black people do not know how to use technology.

The thread is already locked, but other threads with similar themes have started. There is one thread that is discussing character customization, with forumers asking for Marcus' race to be changed in-game.

There are still a lot of forumers, however, who are okay with Marcus being the protagonist, and pointed out that the color of his skin should not even be an issue.

"I'm seriously questioning the sanity of so many people whose problem seems to be protagonists of another gender or skin color to theirs!" forum user DuX1112 commented.

This is not the first time that a video game has been talked about because of racial issues. In 2002, "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" was slammed by Haitian-American groups for promoting racist hate crime.

"Watch Dogs 2" will be available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on November 15.
