'Song Of the Deep' Review: An Undersea Adventure That Lacks Polish
Jazz RosinInsomniac Games has become quite well-known for its platformer games like "Spyro the Dragon" and "Rachet & Clank." "Song of the Deep" is a departure from the developer's previous styles.
Here are some of the reviews for the Metroidvania-style game, "Song of the Deep."
US Gamer is impressed by the music of "Song of the Deep." The music of the game that accompanies the action is described by the site as "hauntingly beautiful, and works perfectly with the underwater setting."
The game's large map is "gorgeously rendered, and features a wide variety of wonderful locales to explore." The interface is also nicely designed, clean and simple.
The boss battles however are quite easy, and the game has a short lifespan, spanning only seven to eight hours.
Destructoid gave "Song of the Deep" an average rating, praising the game for its heartwarming plot. However, the reviewer had a few gripes about some of the elements in the game.
"Each area has a unique feel, but showcases one cohesive design that doesn't seem like it borrows too heavily from one another," Destructoid's Chris Carter said. "But the character and enemy models do look cheap, especially when the game starts re-using the latter with slightly different colors."
As a Metroidvania-style game, "Song of the Deep" "only partially succeeds." The main path is said to be too linear, which makes it too easy to complete an area.
Destructoid ended its review saying that while "Song of the Deep" is a game worth playing, it still is a title that needs more polish, "despite its sparkling surface."
GamesRadar+ - 2.5 out of 5
GamesRadar is not as sold on the game as the first two sites, giving the game a score of 2.5 out of 5. "Song of the Deep" is described as a beautiful game "let down by uninspired puzzles, tedious travel, and listless combat."
"Insomniac had the admirable intention of promoting substance over style in a satisfying, subaqueous environment, but sadly, there's no treasure at the bottom of this ocean." GamesRadar's Shabana Arif wrote.
