Waiting For 'Red Dead Redemption 2'? Other Western-Themed Video Games You Should Check Out
Jazz RosinWe love "Red Dead Redemption" for its wild west theme, horseback riding and gun shooting showdowns, so it comes as no surprise that fans are clamoring for another "Red Dead" title.
With the release of "Red Dead Redemption 2," or "Red Dead 3" or however you want to call it, still up in the air, here are some Western-themed video games that will tide you over until Rockstar Games finally decides to release the sequel.
"Borderlands" (2009)
Technically, "Borderlands" is set in space, but it is categorized as a "Space Western" title, so it comes pretty close. The first person shooter with role-playing game elements gives out a whiff of Western air.
In "Borderlands," the zombies and aliens take the place of the outlaws commonly found in the Wild West, and instead of revolvers, you're decked out in high-tech weapons such as assault rifles and rocket launchers.
"Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath" (2005)
When people say "Oddworld," "Munch's Oddysee" or even "Abe's Oddysee" comes to mind, but another little known "Oddworld" title, "Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath" is actually based on a Wild West setting.
Developed for a variety of platforms in 2005, the game revolves around the adventures of a bounty hunter named Stranger, the protagonist of the game. Stranger travels through various town to catch Outlaws in exchange for money.
"Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath" is available on Google Play so you might want to check that out.
"Mad Dog McCree" (1990)
We're not talking about that cowboy that always says it's high noon. Nope, not that one. This McCree is, literally, the real deal.
Originally released as a live -action laserdisc video game in 1990, "Mad Dog McCree" is a true blue Western experience, using a light-gun controller as you play through the game.
The classic shooter was released for the Nintendo Wii as part of the "Mad Dog McCree: Gunslinger Pack." It is also made available on the PlayStation Network, with an HD remaster released in 2013. Time to dust off your Playstation Move controller.
"Red Dead Redemption 2" still does not have a release date at the moment, so you might want to check out these games in the meantime. In case you missed it, "Red Dead Redemption" is now an Xbox backward compatible title, so this should bring back all the Wild West feels for now.
