Facebook With Oculus: Social Experience On A Virtual Reality Scale?
C. de LacyA lot of people can remember the time when Facebook acquired Oculus, the same company behind the revitalization of virtual reality in gaming. Others were skeptical at what the combination of the companies will accomplish, but we'll get answers for those questions soon.
A recent report from Tech Radar states about Facebook, breaking the norms and the expectation of being isolated in VR. This is exactly what Facebook and Oculus are looking to accomplish today.
"Virtual reality is the perfect platform to put people first," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said. He mentioned this just recently at the Oculus Connect 3 conference.
Knowing Facebook, a lot of people might think that each and every VR experience will be social, but Zuckerberg pointed out that not all will necessarily be that way. Still, for those who wants to get connected with their friends and families will have various ways of interacting with each other while using the VR headset.
Facebook and Oculus showed some "social VR" features like games and other activities as well as those, which they are still working on to integrate with the Oculus Rift and the Gear VR as well.
Mark, himself, tried out the Rift headset as well as the Touch controllers to demonstrate the experience. It shows him with an avatar that represents his movements. Along with two other avatars, Zuckerberg traveled from one exotic place to another via VR.
Though it may look like a half-baked "Mii" (from Nintendo's avatar system) with virtual reality, it did show that the social media giant is serious and is actively working on integrating VR on Facebook.
From the same report on the same event, Oculus also showed a nifty amount of already working features in contrast to what Facebook is still working on. One of the main highlights is the customizable VR identities that users can create.
Oculus says that there are over 1 billion permutations possible, which is tad loads more than enough to make any Avatar unique for everybody. The Avatars are expected to arrive along with the Touch controllers that will launch December 6 and early 2017 on Mobile platforms
