'Mass Effect Andromeda' Update: Romance, Combat, Companions, More

A whole new slew of information about Bioware's much anticipated action RPG "Mass Effect Andromeda" has emerged.

Game Informer senior reviews editor Joe Juba, who experienced "Mass Effect Andromeda" firsthand as part of its cover story for the game, answered on Reddit "Mass Effect" fans' burning questions about the much awaited Bioware title.

Character Companions

Bioware revealed two companions in "Mass Effect Andromeda," Game Rant reported. The first one is Liam, a "youthful, enthusiastic, and idealistic" ex-cop who will most likely serve as the protagonist's best friend figure in the game.

Another one is PeeBee, an Asari with a bubbly personality and a sharp tongue. PeeBee is described by Bioware's Mac Walters as a character who has a sense for adventure, and is in stark contrast with "Mass Effect"'s other Asari character, Liara.

On Romance

Romance is a staple element in "Mass Effect" games, and Juba has something to share about this.

"The team seems committed to offering of broader range of interactions," Juba said. "Like, it won't just be 'pursue a love interest, make the right dialogue options, then have sex before the final dungeon.' Some characters might be up for a longer term thing, some might just be flings."

"Some might [be] completely unromance-able," Juba added, "but even in those cases, the dev team wants to make the culminations of those relationships interesting - even if they aren't sexy."

On Combat

The combat in the "Mass Effect" games have changed over the years, and there will also be changes in "Mass Effect Andromeda."

"I definitely saw pieces of all three games across various features in 'Andromeda', but in terms of combat specifically, it is most like the multiplayer in 'Mass Effect 3'," the editor said. "A bigger focus on hot-keyed powers (with individual, not global, cooldown timers) is probably the main factor there. You aren't always bringing up a radial menu - and pausing the action - to activate your abilities."

"Mass Effect Andromeda" is still scheduled for a Spring 2017 release, according to PC Games N, but without an exact release date for it.
