Apple Watch 3 Specs, Features & Release Date: What We Know So Far
Gio C.Smartwatch users are already anticipating the release of the Apple Watch 3, the electronics giant's next offering, despite Apple Watch 2's release just a few months ago. Here's a run-through of what to expect for the next-generation wearable.
The Apple Watch 3 is expected to have a circular body and curved edges, a significant change as opposed to the Watch 2's square design.
The company has maintained the box-shaped watch for two generations, citing usability concerns and sparking several debates on its market value since Samsung, Motorola and LG, have successfully launched their smartphones with a circular appearance.
Apple's next-generation watch is also expected to have a front-facing camera for users to take selfies and video calls on the road, via FaceTime. The camera is said to be placed on the watch's top bezel.
Furthermore, the new watch may feature a magnetic, multi-function wristband, for security and additional orientation modes.
The smartwatch may also feature a new display technology - possibly an OLED panel, more health sensors than that of the Watch 2, and new wireless connectivity to make it less reliant on the iPhone.
The Watch 3 may also be able to run on its own with the inclusion of an untethered mode, and onboard 3G or LTE connectivity - Apple, however, may not allow it as this will impact a lot on its battery life.
Other features that may be present in the Watch 3 are Qi wireless-charging capabilities, smart straps similar to that implemented in Pebble Time, better waterproofing and the Touch ID fingerprint sensor.
On the technical side of things, the Apple Watch 3 is expected to have a Cortex-A32 chip, which promises significant performance gains. In addition, the device is rumored to feature 4 to 16 GB of storage space - perfect for storing a large number of music files inside the Apple Watch.
Taking a look at Apple's release cycle for the Apple Watch, it is possible that the next-generation watch could be released in September 2017 - the same period of the Watch 2's release, and may start at $470 for the base models.
Stay tuned as more information are revealed regarding Apple's next-generation smartwatch, the Apple Watch 3.
