'Battlefield 1' Giant's Shadow Launches This Week, Spectator Mode To Be Added To Game

Electronic Arts will be launching a brand new map for its World War I themed shooter "Battlefield 1" this week.

The latest Giant Shadow update will bring tons of tweaks to "Battlefield 1," as well as some major changes. Here are the most notable ones.

New Map: Giant's Shadow

Described by EA Dice as "a massive crashed airship casting its shadow onto the battlefield," the brand new map called Giant's Shadow is said to be based on The Batlle of the Selle of 1918, also known as the "Hundred Day Offensive."

"British forces have broken through the Hindenburg line and are heading towards a strategic railway center," the description says. "The outcome is uncertain. An armored train can still turn the tide."

The update will also introduce a new support weapon, the grenade crossbow, according to Polygon.

Spectator Mode

Probably the biggest update in the latest patch is the addition of Spectator mode, which allows players to switch between first person and third person view as an observer.

Spectators can also view the battlefield from a bird's eye point of view via Table Top mode, and move freely through the map via Free Cam mode. The team said that they aim to improve Spectator mode from previous versions of "Battlefield".

"We gathered feedback from the community and focused much of our efforts on improving the usability and flow moving from player-to-player and switching between the different view modes (Table Top, Player View, and Free Cam)," EA Dice explained. "Another key design emphasis for us was to make Spectator a viable tool for the community to create content which includes a moveable third-person camera, depth of field, and camera filters."

New Custom Game Setting: Standard Issue Rifles

For players who are fans of custom games, a new mode called Standard Issue Rifles will be added with the next update. The custom mode will allow players to gain access to all rifles in the game, regardless of faction. This, however, is only limited to custom mode, and will not be available as part of the base game.

The new Giant's Shadow update for "Battlefield 1" will be available today for those who preordered the game and for Season Pass holders, and on Dec. 20 for everyone else. The full patch notes can be found here.
