Pres. Trump Targets To Cut F-35 Fighter Jet Costs, Thousands Workers Affected?
Shena GolosinoU.S. President Donald Trump had freely expressed his opposition on the defense contractors of the F-35 fighter jet programme. He said that this programme cost a lot for the state, as he wanted to cut too much federal spending.
According to The Star, the Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighter jet programme has already dropped 3.4 percent of its total expenses. However, President Trump still does not agree with such high prices "Billions of dollars can and will be saved on military (and other) purchases after January 20th." Pres. Trump posted on his Twitter account. He urges the federal government to cancel such expensive order.
Meanwhile, it was a surprise that U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain supported Trump's opposition of the F-35's costs. McCain mentioned that the president will not be able to cancel the programme because the funds were already allocated. On the other hand, he emphasized that Pres. Trump can lessen the price later on.
Furthermore, the Lockheed Martin's F-35 programme leader, Jeff Babione, have expressed his sincerity that the president is just concern with the affordability of projects. However, he mentioned that they have already invested millions just to cut the jet's price.
With the estimated total expenses of $400 Billion, it was described as the most expensive system of weapon recorded in history. Also, the key partners of Lockheed like Northrop Grumman Corp, BAE Systems, and United Technologies Corp, are already creating three variants of F-35s for the U.S. military and its allies. According to Chicago Tribune, the congress is aware that this opposition of Pres. Trump on F-35 costs could highly impact its tens of thousands of workers in the 45 states. Such number of workers came from different states.
Mainly, Texas, Georgia, Arizona, California, and Florida are taking the lead roles manufacturing the jet fighter. On the other hand, this issue could bring along discussion on how federal will be lessened and at the same time, on how workers will not be much impacted.
