Samsung Galaxy S8 Latest News: Korean Smartphone's AI Assistant May Be Called ‘Bixby;’ Launch Expected At MWC 2017
AASalvadorPrevious patent agreement between Samsung and Google could possibly pose a problem in the launching of Samsung Galaxy S8 AI assistant which is similar to Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana and Google's Assistant. Last November, the Korean company has announced that it will bring an AI assistant to its smart phone after the company has acquired the AI of Viv Labs.
In 2014, Samsung and Google signed an agreement about patent sharing, which allows the two tech giants to share devices and services for a decade. However, the agreement also includes a non-compete clause that could allow Google to prevent Samsung from having its own personal assistant.
Viv could indeed be as intelligent as Siri as the former was created by Apple's personal assistant co-founder. Dag Kittlaus was among the 30 employees of Viv who joined Samsung just this year.
In a report by Recode, Samsung's big boss Injong Rhee said that the Korean giant tech company is not looking at AI as broadly as Apple, Google or Microsoft. Their focus is more on the devices and how customers interact with their latest gadgets.
Samsung Galaxy S8 AI is different from other digital assistants in a way that it is open to other partners in the industry. Kittlaus added that Viv will be an open AI platform, more like Wikipedia, rather than the exclusive automated assistants.
In South Korea, Samsung has registered for a brand mark "Bixby." The registration seeks exclusive ownership of the word. The company has not issued an official statement, but tech geeks believe that it could be the name of Samsung Galaxy S8 AI.
Artificial Intelligence assistants are popular among smart phone users as it allows hands-free use and even voice recognition. Samsung Galaxy S8 is expected to be launched early next year in New York after the trade show of Mobile World Congress 2017.
