‘League of Legends’ Grab the Top Spot For 2016 Free To Play Market; Along With Overwatch for Most Revenued PC Game

SuperData's Year in Review 2016 report on the Digital Games and Interactive Media market was released today. In it, the free to play market was analyzed, and "League of Legends" was ranked on top.

The year-end projection for "League of Legends" was $1.7 billion from SuperData and its beaten that mark by one month, already hitting that number by the end of November. "League of Legends" far surpassed its other competition, the closest being "Dungeon Fighter Challenge," which was driven by huge spending in Asian markets.

"League of Legends" ranked as number one with $1.7 Billion followed by "Dungeon Fighter Challenge" and Crossfire" with $1.1 Billion as both in second place. The third place was "World of Tanks" with its $0.40 Billion followed by "DOTA 2" which ranks in fourth place with $0.26 Billion.

It is clear that "League of Legends" was one of the top grossing games this year. Even Blizzard's "Overwatch," which is a wildly successful game with a full retail launch only generated $585.6 million. The popular game was over three times that concerns that the game would become a game changer. SuperData disclosed the PC Revenue for Premium Games, which games that has to be purchased and are not free-to-play. Blizzard's Overwatch took home the top grossing PC game.

Last year's Top 1 Counter Strike: Go was only gained $257.2 Million, just as half as "Overwatch" has. SuperData's report shows that premium PC games generated $5.4 billion overall this year, and that "Overwatch" was responsible for 10 percent of that. The game was only available for purchase from the end of May making its revenue all that much more impressive.

It's worth noting that "Overwatch" on top of the list. The premium PC Games market was actually predicted by SuperData to be slightly less next year than it was this year, before rebounding for 2018 and 2019.
