Twitter Introduces 360-Degree Live Video Streaming on Its Periscope App
Louise BonquinTwitter can stream live from now on. This was made possible due to the addition of the 360-degree video streaming support on Periscope.
The social networking service company has been taking out old features and adding new ones to go with the changing times. As mentioned, the latest to be introduced is the live streaming video for its Periscope application. On Dec. 29, via the Periscope blog site, team Periscope announced the 360 live streaming on Twitter.
"Starting today, you'll be able to join live 360 videos on Periscope and Twitter from some incredible broadcasters," the post reads. "Getting front-row access at exclusive events, traveling to places across the globe and getting up close with well-known personalities."
Variety reported that it has been a while since Twitter started this project of incorporating the 360-degree live video into its service. It was added that the company even hires former Apple designer Alessandro Sabatelli to be the project's AR & VR director and Greg Gopman as VR program manager. The latter only worked briefly since he left due to controversies.
Then again, while all Twitter users are allowed to watch the live 360-degree videos being streamed, not everyone can do the broadcasting part. Only a small circle of partners can create live streams but the Periscope team mentioned that they will make it available to more people in the coming weeks.
For people who can broadcast live on Twitter via the Periscope app, they are required to use the Insta360 Nano camera for now. But what about those who do not have this device? Periscope notes that creators can try connecting other 360 cameras and see if they will work using the Periscope Producer service.
Finally, the exact date when the general public can start creating their own 360-degree live video through Periscope was not mentioned. However, since more and more partners are being added to the list of who can broadcast, it should be available to everyone in no time.
