Asia’s Snapchat-Clone ‘Snow’ Is Claiming 40 To 50 Million Users Monthly
Cris Xander JulianoAsia's popular Snapchat-clone "Snow", developed by Korean company Naver, claims it crossed the 100 million mark in downloads in December 2016 with 40 to 50 million active users each month and continuing to grow steadily according to a report by Tech Crunch.
Those figures still does not compare to Snapchat as it has 150 million active users on a daily basis, but it did catch the attention of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg when he tried unsuccessfully to buy it last year according to other reports. Naver stated that rejecting Facebook was the right thing to do as Snow has a potential to be as successful as the Chat app LINE, which is Naver's biggest success so far.
Snow is very popular among Asian countries that emulate the features of Snapchat but with more options for face filters and stickers. China has the largest market in terms of users as many of the western services are blocked in this country including Snapchat, followed by Japan and Korea.
The numbers that have been mentioned are on par with the previously reported from October when Snow had exceeded the 80 million mark in downloads and adding 10 million more per month. There is more potential to this app though, as the Chinese government estimated that there are over 700 million internet users in the country alone, add those figures to the internet users from Japan, Korea and other Asian countries, the 100 million downloads would represent a mere drop in the ocean.
Snow has been growing in popularity as it features a lot more face filters, stickers and also includes a GIF maker compared to the U.S. based app Snapchat. The stories posted in Snow have a 72-hour lifespan as opposed to Snapchat's 24 hours.
