What Original Shield Android TV Owners Need To Know About NVIDIA’s New Box
Arianne GiftThe new Shield Android TV that NVIDIA unveiled at CES 2017 has drawn a lot of attention, with many commenting on how the new model compares with the original. Some wonder if the new model's features can come back to the old Shield Android TV and if the new peripherals come with a backwards compatibility function.
Good news to owners of the old box, it will not be left behind. Here's what's going to happen with the original Shield Android TV.
The first thing to remember is that the internals of the new box are similar to the original model. Sure, NVIDIA made the new one smaller, but it's only to get rid of the unused space. The old box also has an SD card slot to expand storage, which is an advantage over the new Shield Android TV.
The old box will also get software updates from NVIDIA, which means the new Android 7.0 Nougat will be coming to the old box. Android Central reported that the update will arrive the day the new box begins shipping, and while NVIDIA hasn't put out a date, the listing on Amazon shows that the release date is January 16.
Once the software update arrives on the Shield Android TV, owners get a series of improvements, including better gaming performance. One can also get a Google Assistant in the next updates, according to NVIDIA.
The new Shield controller is smaller and packed with more features. Its new TV remote also a better battery life. Notably, the old Shield Android TV works well with the new controllers. This means that even if one opts to buy new controllers, it would not be a problem. Plus, the old ones would make good backup or for multiplayer gaming.
There's really no need to buy a new Shield Android TV if the old one still works. Well, purchasing new accessories might be a good idea -- it'll feel very much like a new box.
