Source Of Strange Radio Waves Hitting Earth From Space Finally Found By Scientists, Creates More Questions!
Niyati S.Imagine being a scientist and being puzzled by a mystery that has spanned over decades. The same thing has happened to scientists at Cornell University, except they have finally managed to solve a mysterious space puzzle. A strange crackle of radio waves travelling through space and hitting Earth has puzzled researchers for multiple years. These waves have made them curious and inquisitive and finally, the source of these waves has been discovered. But is this answer enough or does this discovery generate more questions than answers itself?
This discovery has been made by scientists at Cornell University along with other astronomers across the world. Now we await proper answers as to why these radio bursts are even happening in the void of the universe. And what could they possibly signify? Over a decade ago, researchers first came across the phenomenon of fast radio bursts in space, called 'FRBs' in short.
One of these FRBs named FRB 121102 was caught by the astronomers at Cornell University, although they could not pinpoint the source of the waves clearly. The burst came from a general area that could have several possible elements creating the waves. Cornell University scientists then teamed up with National Radio Astronomy Observatory. They finally had access to the super powerful Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array to examine things properly.
These researchers identified the area where the previous FRBs had been spotted and waited for almost 50 hours. After the long wait, the burst was spotted again. Next, they teamed up with other equipped research centres across the world. The result? The source was a galaxy that is three billion light years from Earth and Milky Way. Needless to say, a radio wave from such a great distance means that it is coming from a huge and powerful source.
"These radio flashes must have enormous amounts of energy to be visible from over 3 billion light-years away," said Shami Chatterjee in the reports to media. Maybe it is a new born star achieving the status of a supernova or maybe it is a dying galaxy- nothing is certain. But the efforts are persistent, and we hope to get some real answers soon.
